- Integrated Health and Development Programme in 6 Villages in Ri Bhoi and 1 in Jaintia Hills. The Programmes addresses Public Health Issues like Sanitation and Water, Livelihood programmes through SHGs; Training on health with focus on Reproductive Child Health; Providing Health care to women and children with focus on Pregnant women; Promoting Indigenous system of medicines and livelihood; and Capacitating village leaders (both men, women and youth) in Leadership skills and Advocacy strategy. The Jaintia Hills Programme in Pammanik is supported by IIMK Belgium while in Ri Bhoi District is supported by EED Germany through CSD Imphal.
- Empowering Communities in the prevention of HIV and Drug Use This is a programme implemented in the state of Meghalaya. 15 trainings are conducted in a year in various districts of the state. The Programme envisages producing young Volunteers who will spread awareness about HIV/AIDS and Drug Use to their Peers and also to their Community. Last year the Programme was able to train and capacitate 390 young Peer Trainers in 4 of the 7 districts in the State. Programme is supported by United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime.
- Opioid Substitution Therapy in 2 sites in Meghalaya, through SHARAN/NACO. It addresses the issues of IDUs and reducing the HIV transmission among them. The activities include Primary health Care to Drug Users, Abscess Management, and Oral Substitution Therapy. Project is funded by National AIDS Control Organisation and SHARAN, New Delhi.
- Targeted Intervention to minimise HIV infection among IDUs in Jowai: The project started in July 2008 and addresses IDU needs through Needle Syringe Exchange Programme, Primary health care ( Abscess management, referral etc), Condom promotion and distribution, Advocacy with community and stakeholders, detoxification (referral). All these activities functions through a Drop in Centre in Ladthadlaboh Jowai where IDUs also drop in for recreation and counselling.
- Community sensitisation and empowering of PLHAs in Meghalaya.This project started in July 2007 with support from Catholic Relief services. The goal of this project is to Build Community’s resilience against HIV infection and develop the potential of PLHA in Meghalaya through activities like Community sensitisation programmes, consultations with headmen, Leadership trainings for PLHAs, Exposure Training with other state networks, Advocacy workshops with State stakeholders and treatment of OIs and general health care for PLHAs. Project Funded by Catholic Relief Services.
- Mother NGO in RCH programmes for East Khasi Hills District and Jaintia Hills District. VHAM main roles and responsibilities is to capacitate Field NGOs in these Districts through trainings. The MNGO scheme is part of the National Rural Health Mission scheme started by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India from April 2005.
Main activities of this project:
- Selecting and identifying unserved and underserved areas.
- Identifying Field NGOs.
- Working in liaison with the District Health Mission and the State Health Mission as well.
- Capacitating Field NGOs on Maternal and Child Health, Adolescent health, Family Planning Programmes and Immunisation, besides others.
- Monitoring activities of Field NGOs
- Documenting Best Practices.
Public Private Partnership with Meghalaya Government:
W.e.f February 1, 2009, VHAM will manage 2 Primary Health Centres in East Khasi Hills District viz Jatah PHC and Balat PHC. Currently, VHAM is inducting the entire PHC staff through interviews and assessments. The project gives VHAM the total authority of managing the PHCs with financial support from the State government. This is a scheme that falls under the Public Private Partnership of the National Rural Health Mission. In a nutshell the project is to ensure 24x 7 quality primary health care to people in the villages under the PHC, addressing emergencies and assisting the Government in times of epidemics, natural disasters etc.
Partnership Against Tobacco and Action for Policies, Politics, Legislation and Empowerment (PAT and APPLE) Project II
This project deals with the Control of Tobacco Products Act and the related issues particularly The Prohibition of Smoking in Public Places Rules. VHAM in Partnership with Voluntary health Association of India is advocating with State Governments to ensure that the tobacco Act is implemented effectively. The project also has activities that include sensitisation programmes, Mass campaigns and education. As part of the project VHAM has also open a resource centre that provides information on sites of tobacco related issues, information about the act etc (on line and through literature) .The project is supported by the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease.
